Penetration tests or pentesting – Jargon Buster
In the latest in our series of cyber security jargon busters, we give the low down on penetration testing.
A penetration test (also known as a pen test or ethical hacking), is an authorised, simulated attack against your network to identify any weaknesses in the system.
They’re designed to assess how secure a system is and show you any exploitable weaknesses by attempting to penetrate the network in the same way a hacker would.
It’s a bit like going round and testing all the doors and windows in your home to see if you can get in, so you can sort out any weaknesses before a burglar visits.
Pentesting can therefore provide reassurance and help take your cyber security to the next level by highlighting exactly where and how you need to improve.
