How cyber security can help you win business

In a recent video, we explain why more and more businesses and organisations are demanding cyber security certifications from their suppliers, which you should consider getting, and how to go about it.

Cyber security is becoming a bigger focus for organisations all over the world. Threats are constantly evolving and clients, customers and supply chains are increasingly demanding proof that you have measures in place to protect their information.

4 really good reasons to get an accreditation

1) They really do make you more secure

Getting through the certification process means you’re going to be doing more and more things right and getting your cyber and data security house in order. Often little things make a big difference and the steps you need to take can make you much more robust

2) They mean you can show people you take this seriously

Accreditations mean you can add a badge or logo to your website, emails, and so on. This means you get credit for what you’ve done and it is easy for customers, suppliers and so on to see you take data and cyber security seriously.

3) They give your customers peace of mind

There are a whole load of reasons your customers don’t want you to be the victim of a hack – it could shut you down when they need you, or mean their confidential data is lost or published on the dark web. A universally recognised accreditation goes a long way to showing them they can rely on you because you are doing things right.

4) They help you build competitive advantage

All businesses need ways of showing they are a better choice than their competitors. If you have an important cyber security certification and your customers don’t, this is an increasingly valuable point of differentiation that puts them at a disadvantage. More and more customers will be demanding accreditations of their suppliers, so why not get in early and have something to shout about in your marketing?

So which accreditations should you be looking at and how hard are they to obtain?

Well, for businesses in the UK, there are 3 main ones to consider:

1) Cyber Essentials

The government-approved Cyber Essentials is a great place to start and it comes with cyber insurance. It costs just £295+vat for the certification, or £595 for an assisted package where you’re helped through the process. It helps you protect against 80% of the most common forms of internet threat.

2) Cyber Essentials Plus

Then you’ve got Cyber Essentials Plus – the next step up. It covers the same measures as Cyber Essentials, but it also includes 3rd party verification, which gives it far more weight. It costs from £1,620+vat.

3) ISO 27001

You’ve probably heard of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, but ISO 27001 is the International Standard for information security. It’s a bigger project to take on, but it’s transformative, and should form the backbone of your information security strategy. Traditional implementation is expensive, but with Securious, you can participate in our pioneering academy to get you ready from just £995+vat.

So there you go – 4 big business reasons and 3 options to choose from, depending on your level and the stage of the journey you are on.
