Case study: Troy UK and Securious
Troy UK first engaged with Securious in 2020 because they wanted help meaningfully and proactively protecting their organisation from cyber threats. Securious has since been working as an extension of Troy’s internal team, providing a fully managed cyber security service to minimise cyber risk so Troy can focus on realising their huge growth ambitions.
About Troy
Troy are the leading group of industrial engineering supplies in the UK. They provide their members with access to leading suppliers of industrial tools and equipment with great brands and vast ranges; with over 400 suppliers, 2000 brands and 400 members, Troy has a collective group trading power of over £1.2b.
This means Troy members can provide their customers with the products they need and, with Troy’s buying power, members can offer them at the best possible prices. Plus, Troy gives members extra support with a range of strategic and administrative services.
About Securious
Securious is the South West’s leading cyber security company. We help clients with Governance, Risk and Compliance (PCI DSS, ISO 27001, 3DS, Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus); we offer a Managed Detection and Response service (helping clients stay secure with live 24/7 monitoring and visibility of their environments, threat detection and automated alerts, which are overseen by our analysts), and penetration testing services.
The objective
When Troy first approached Securious in 2020, they recognised that implementing good cyber security across the organisation would be critical to the success of their huge growth ambitions. Cyber attacks can be devastating for all sizes of organisation, but as a large and growing company, Troy recognised they could easily become a target for an attack. This meant they wanted to ensure they were in good shape to minimise the chances of a successful breach harming their operations, systems, bank balance or reputation.
Troy didn’t approach cyber security as a compliance exercise simply to tick boxes. Instead, they recognised cyber as a key risk and wanted to make sure everything was done properly to reduce the likelihood and potential impact of an attack and to secure the business as it continued to scale.
The challenge
Troy had a diverse, complex environment with lots of different interactions between third parties, supply chains and internal personnel across the whole UK and Europe. They didn’t have cyber security specialists within their organisation and instead of looking to build an internal resource, they looked to Securious for independent support.
The solution
Securious and Troy have been working together since 2020 in a cyber security partnership, where Securious essentially operates as an extension of Troy’s internal team to deliver a fully managed cyber security service from a strategic level all the way down to execution.
A core component of this service is Securious’ Managed Detection and Response (MDR) solution, a package of industry-leading tools that monitors clients’ environments and devices around the clock. It’s powered by Securious’ pioneering Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solution, Monikal. Monikal was developed to collect logs from multiple devices across a network and amalgamate the data into a usable form, helping improve security and compliance, keeping a historic record of activity and flagging anything out of the ordinary or suspicious.
Securious has also been working with Troy to provide free cyber security content and resources to Troy members to complement Troy’s offering of strategic and administrative services. This helps deliver added value to its members by providing them with guidance to protect their organisation from cyber attackers.
The results
Troy are now in a much stronger position in terms of their cyber security, with a good cyber posture and a clear understanding of any threats to their environment. They’ve implemented controls to protect their organisation and have been working closely with Securious to address vulnerabilities and mitigate cyber risks.
This means that, should they be hit with a cyber attack, they’re well-equipped to respond and have minimised the potential impact.
Outsourcing their cyber security to a specialist independent party like Securious means they can be confident in their cyber posture as they continue to scale. Having the fundamentals of cyber security in place makes growing a business much easier and derisks the organisation for potential investors.
Tom Hocking, Troy Group IT Director, comments:
“Working with Securious is exactly as we had hoped – we know they have our backs, and we consider them to be part of our team. Whatever we need in terms of cyber security, we’re confident that they’ll prioritise the needs of our organisation and will always be able to help us.
“We’re looking forward to expanding and continuing our partnership and working together to build Troy’s resilience for many years to come – Troy will strategically never bring cyber security in house as we will maintain a view that our “homework” should be marked by trusted independents and not internally.”
Pete Woodward, Securious CEO comments:
“Troy are a rapidly growing, ambitious organisation. We’re delighted to be part of their journey, working by their side to make sure they’re secure as they continue to grow.
“We love working with clients who are so proactive about cyber security and genuinely care about making it better – Troy are a shining example of doing it right, and it continues to be a pleasure working with them.”
