New starter: Securious welcomes Teagan to the team

We’re delighted to welcome Teagan Collyer to the team as Junior Cyber Security Consultant! In this blog, we ask him about his new role, what he was doing before joining us and what he likes doing in his spare time…

What is your role at Securious and what will you be doing as part of it?

My role at Securious is Junior Cyber Security Consultant. As part of my role I will be assisting clients with Cyber Essentials, and the team is also keen for me to assist with penetration testing, which I’m looking forward to learning about.

What made you want to get into cyber security?

In school I always enjoyed my IT classes and then in college I found I was interested in both the hardware aspect of IT (building computers and researching hardware), computer networking and cyber security. I chose to go down the computer networking/cyber security route because it’s such an exciting and relevant sector to be in. Also, because the demand in the sector is high, I’m hoping it will lead to an increased chance of job security and good career prospects.

What were you doing before?

After college, I went to University to study Cyber Security and Computer Forensics. This was during the Pandemic and I found the first year at university underwhelming (online lectures) and expensive (confined to halls and no part-time work available). Because of this, I decided to halt my degree and look for part-time work whilst studying in my spare time (completing courses in Google Cloud Platform, Python, C++ and Cyber Security). I worked in a hotel which helped me develop my customer service skills (and patience!) and part-time in a computer repair shop, repairing desktop computers and laptops with various hardware and software faults.

How are you finding working for Securious so far?

I’m finding working at Securious great so far. The workplace atmosphere has been very friendly and welcoming. I’m enjoying working with clients to help them with Cyber Essentials – it is interesting to see how different people interpret the questions.

Tell us a little bit about you…

In my spare time, I like to read – I have over 2,000 books in my various e-book libraries! I play games on my PC and Xbox, mostly simulation and RPG games such as Cities: Skylines Civilisation VI, Cyberpunk 2077, Just Cause 4 and Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. I also create projects in Python in my spare time – my current project is using Discord’s API (you can find it here), and finally I’m an administrator/moderator for a few Discord communities. I’m also a lover of dogs, I have a sprockador and pointer-visla.
