Securious launches Monikal – the first SIEM solution designed for mid-level organisations

We’re so excited to launch Monikal, and in doing so make it easy and cost-effective for mid-level organisations to significantly improve their cyber security.

Monikal is our world-leading SIEM solution that monitors your network 24/7 to help you meet compliance requirements (e.g. PCI DSS), and understand what’s happening across your IT environment so you can detect and respond to threats.

It doesn’t matter whether your team members are based in an office, remotely or both – through a simple dashboard and alerts, Monikal can give you full visibility of everything happening across your network, while keeping a historic record of activity. Think of it like high-tech CCTV for everything digital in your organisation.

How does it work?

Monikal collects data about all activity across your network. From requests made to your web server, to commands from privileged administrator accounts, to email login attempts.

Monikal then collates and makes sense of all of the information it collects, identifying potential vulnerabilities and flagging anything suspicious for your attention, so you can detect and respond to threats promptly.

Here are some examples of suspicious activity that may be happening across your network, but that you’d be unlikely to spot without technology like Monikal:

  • A member of your team downloads your whole client database onto a USB stick
  • A junior member of your team escalates their privileges and gains access to confidential data
  • Critical or high vulnerabilities exist on systems and have not yet been patched
  • Employees are attempting to visit blocked websites which may host malware etc.

How does it improve cyber security?

Not only can Monikal alert you to critical threats – like a user stealing your data or downloading malware to your network – but it can also look at lower-level activity that could turn into something serious down the line.

A report by IBM found that the average time to detect and contain a data breach is 280 days. The same report found that by containing a breach in under 200 days, you can save $1 million in costs. Monikal can help you detect a breach quickly, which will allow you to mitigate damage, remedy the problem and significantly reduce the financial impact of the breach.

How does it improve compliance?

Businesses and organisations need to have logging and monitoring capabilities in order to meet the requirements of a number of internationally recognised standards.

For example, all organisations that store, transmit or process cardholder data need to be compliant with PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard). PCI DSS Requirement 10 requires you to track and monitor all access to network resources and cardholder data.

This means that if you store card payments, you need to have a means of collecting and storing logs (which are basically records of activity) across your network, and storing them so that, if the worst happens, you are able to determine the cause of the compromise.

Monikal provides log management and network monitoring capability, which enables you to meet Requirement 10 of PCI DSS.

Another example is Cyber Essentials – Monikal can help your organisation keep track of issues and provide regular reports on the 5 security controls required for Cyber Essentials certification – firewalls; secure configuration; user access control; malware protection, and patch management.

Whether you need to conform to PCI DSS or any other international standard such as ISO27001, Monikal can provide compliant reports to help you meet the requirements.

Monikal – an Exeter Science Park success story

Securious is based at Exeter Science Park, where we’ve spent the last few years developing Monikal, so we can bring a technology normally reserved for Enterprise-level businesses to the mid-level market.

Pete Woodward, Securious Cofounder and CTO, comments:

“We’ve spent a long time researching the technology behind Monikal and speaking with clients so we can make sure our offering is perfectly designed to meet the needs of mid-level organisations.

“We are excited to be launching Monikal now because it is especially relevant following a worldwide (and hurried) switch to remote working. We’re excited to help organisations in the South West and beyond really up their cyber security game at a time when it’s more important than ever before. It’s groundbreaking stuff and I look forward to delivering this vital solution to UK businesses.”

Sally Basker, Exeter Science Park CEO, comments:

Exeter Science Park helps innovative STEMM companies like Securious to deliver extraordinary growth and I’m excited to see how, with Monikal, they are extending class-leading cyber security technology to SMEs. Innovative companies and their funders will see how Monikal gives them a competitive edge by securing the valuable intellectual property and critical data in their businesses.  This will help all companies to build back better post-COVID.”
