Welcoming the next generation of cyber security talent

We were delighted to welcome two work experience students, Jibran and Maximilian, to Securious recently for a week of learning about what it’s like to work in cyber security.

During their placement, they spent time with members of our team to gain an insight into the services we provide. From learning about penetration testing and seeing a live demonstration of our Security Operations Centre (SOC), to exploring standards such as PCI DSS and ISO 27001, they experienced how technical expertise, consultancy and governance all play an important role in helping organisations stay secure.

The students also completed practical risk assessments around Exeter Science Park, giving them the opportunity to apply what they had learned in a real-world environment.

Reflecting on his placement, Jibran commented on the opportunity to try pentesting in a controlled test environment:

“I really enjoyed learning about penetration testing and getting to try it out in a controlled environment.”

He was also surprised by the breadth of the industry, commenting that cyber security involves “lots of policy making and consulting to avoid and reduce the impact of attacks”, as well as the technical work many people associate with the profession.

Maximilian said one of the biggest takeaways was understanding “all the different branches involved with cyber security” and “just how many variables you need to consider”. Having experienced the different aspects of the industry first-hand, he said cyber security now feels “an interesting and possible career path”.

At Securious, we’re passionate about helping develop future cyber security talent. It was a pleasure to welcome Jibran and Maximilian to the team, and we wish them both every success with their future studies and careers.
