We’re recruiting – Junior Cyber Security Consultant

Securious team image

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about and wants to get into cyber security. The successful applicant will be technically capable with a good understanding of IT networks and infrastructure, along with possessing excellent communication skills (both written and verbal). This role would really suit someone who wants to move from IT and retrain in cyber security, or ex-service personnel with solid technical knowledge.

About Securious

Securious is the South West’s leading cyber security consultancy. Our services range from assessments of our clients’ current cyber security (like cyber security audits and penetration testing), to support in helping them improve their resilience (like our bespoke MDR packages and cost-effective staff awareness training), through to supporting them to achieve accreditations (like Cyber Essentials and ISO 27001) and helping ensure they’re compliant (with the likes of PCI DSS).

Our clients tend to either process card payments, store sensitive data and/or IP that needs protecting, or have a tech platform upon which their operations are reliant. They range in size and industry from tech start-ups to established law firms, from car dealerships to schools, colleges and universities. Many are based in the South West, though we work with businesses and organisations all over the UK, including Vospers, Weight Watchers, Met Office, Devon Air Ambulance, Vivo Barefoot, University of Exeter and many more.

Because our clients operate across a wide range of sectors and have such differing requirements, no two engagements are the same. That’s why we work hard to ensure they each receive a tailored approach, and we pride ourselves on our close relationships with our clients: our aspiration in every instance is to be a trusted extension of their workforce.

What it’s like working here

We love what we do

We’re a principled, ethics-driven bunch who all love working in cyber security, so you’ll be joining a passionate team of people who care deeply about what we do. We’re looking for someone who feels the same, and is as excited to work in a company that’s helping to make the world a better place as we are.

Training and development

We don’t have salespeople, huge marketing budgets or small growth aspirations here at Securious. This means we’re building our business on our strong reputation, word of mouth and positive feedback/referrals from clients.

In order for this strategy to continue to be successful, we need the very best people working for us. This means we invest heavily in training our team, so they are well-equipped to over-deliver for our clients. There are strong opportunities for progression here at Securious for those who excel in their roles.

Office and remote working

Our office is in the Exeter Science Park with beautiful views of the Devon countryside (and excellent transport links with easy access to the city). We’re embracing the new world of flexible working so we are happy for you to work from home some of the time, but we also think it’s important to see each other’s faces in person regularly, so encourage all our team to come into the office for at least three days per week.

Beyond work

We’ve got a few keen bakers in our midst who all enjoy a bit of healthy competition, so you might find yourself stumbling out of Friday meeting with a swollen belly full of baked goods made fresh the night before (and perhaps a ringing in your ears after a heated debate over whose cheesecake tasted best!). And if you like baking and want to bring in some sweet treats and fighting talk of your own, all the better!

Check out our lockdown baking exploits here, for a sense of how we kept the fun alive while we were stuck at home.

About the role

We’re looking for a full-time team member to provide support and advice to our clients and work with our team to over-deliver against our client commitments.

One of the key areas of responsibility will be the Cyber Essentials process, which is a first step for businesses that want to ensure and prove that their systems are secure. It consists of a simple online assessment that looks at clients’ internet-facing infrastructure, workstations and servers, in order to ensure their current software meets the necessary security standards.

You will support clients where required as they answer the simple online self-assessment questionnaire, which will highlight any gaps in their current systems. These should be resolved before submission and you will provide guidance on how they can achieve this where needed. You’ll then review their responses to ensure they meet the requirements, coming back to the client for any further clarification as required. Then you’ll be responsible for submissions, at which point our clients will be issued with the Cyber Essentials badge and certificate.

You will also be working with our Cyber Security Consultants to develop your skills and knowledge of cyber security and the products and services we offer here at Securious. This may start with shadowing one of our specialist penetration testers, developing into helping with scoping and general admin and perhaps even gaining a pentesting qualification. Or it might mean working with the Cyber Security Operations Centre team to monitor client environments and assist with reporting. You’ll undertake vulnerability assessments and generally provide support to the technical team where required.

Responsibilities

  • Verifying Cyber Essentials submissions
  • Conducting external and internal vulnerability scanning
  • Assisting with penetration testing
    • Assisting with report-writing
    • Assisting with scoping / general admin
  • Assisting with Securious CSOC including client onboarding
    • Monitoring activity
    • Analysing data
    • Assisting with report-writing
  • Feeding back evolving customer requirements and suggestions to the rest of the team
  • Working as part of a team to develop and refine client implementations

Qualifications, skills and experience

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about and wants to get into cyber security. Our focus is more on attitude and aptitude than experience or qualifications, and we’d be very happy to consider sponsoring you through an apprenticeship scheme (up to degree level).

That said, the successful applicant will be technically capable with a good understanding of IT networks and infrastructure, along with possessing excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).

This opportunity would really suit someone who wants to move from IT and retrain in cyber security, or ex-service personnel with solid technical knowledge.

Requirements

  • Understanding of IT networks and infrastructure, common operating systems and an interest in cyber security (essential)
  • Outstanding customer relations skills (essential)
  • Excellent powers of communication – both written and verbal (essential)
  • Computer Science qualification/s (beneficial)
  • Holding, working towards or looking to achieve CompTIA Security+, CompTIA CySA + , CompTIA PenTest +

Salary and benefits

  • £18,000 – £ 24,000 p/a, DOE
  • Ongoing training and development
    • CompTIA Security+
    • CompTIA CySA +
    • CompTIA PenTest +
    • Cyber Essentials Assessor
  • 25 days holiday, excluding bank holidays + your birthday off
  • Employee bonus scheme
